Pardusco Portugese Red
Anselmo Mendes "Pardusco" (Alvarelhão, Pedral, Cainho) - Minho, Portugal
by Shane McGoey
Easily the most iconic producer of the region, Anselmo Mendes is at his best with this light red-cherry Vinho Verde blend. With its bright acidity, low alcohol and slight frizzante, it's everything you could possibly want from a red of the coolest and wettest region of Portugal.
Traditionally the term Pardusco was amoniker befitting the light-colored reds of the region, and before Vinho Verde was even a denomination these blends were heralded as the "Mature Wines of Monção." The nose is plush with raspberry, strawberry andgeranium; a cold maceration and slow fermentation endow maturity and elegance to the flavors.
This wine is a switch-hitter when pairing, more versatile than Pinot Noir. With its backbone of Vinho Verde acidity it will stand up to almost any occasion. Put it to the test as an apéritif, with seafood or paella, even a Lush Burger; or just take a bottle to pound out on the porch as this beautiful weather moves in. It is a moveable feast, and at its price and masterful execution, it's practically thievery.
